The Transfer Student
Southern Illinois University Carbondale is an
excellent place for transfer students ready to move ahead with their
educational plans. SIUC opens the door to the future for thousands
of transfer students every year. The way a college accepts and
evaluates transfer credit is often uppermost in the mind of the
transfer student. We've prepared this brochure to show you how well
you and your transfer credit will fit in at SIUC. We encourage you
to compare SIUC with other colleges and universities you may be
considering. We will do all we can to meet your needs and
interests.
The Compact Agreement and the Illinois Articulation
Initiative (IAI)
SIUC has recognized the transferrable
baccalaureate-oriented associate degree under the Compact Agreement
since 1970, and will continue to recognize the degree under the Illinois Articulation
Initiative.
Associate in Arts (A.A.) or Associate in
Science (A.S.) degree holders from regionally accredited Illinois
institutions will be admitted to SIUC with junior class standing and
will be considered to have completed the university core curriculum
(general education) requirements for general graduation.
The Transferrable General Education Core Curriculum
component of the Illinois Articulation Initiative became effective
at the beginning of the summer 1998 term. Transfer students who have
not earned a baccalaureate-oriented degree-Associate of Arts (A.A.)
or Associate of Science (A.S.)-from an accredited Illinois
institution before attending SIUC, but who have been certified by a
participating Illinois institution as having completed the Illinois
Transferrable General Education Curriculum, will be considered as
having fulfilled the SIUC university core curriculum requirements
for general graduation purposes if their general education component
has a minimum of 37 semester (56 quarter) hours.
Transfer students who have not been certified as
stated above or students who have been certified with fewer than 37
semester hours of general education credit must complete the SIUC
University Core Curriculum requirements. All transferred IAI-approved coursework will be applied to SIUC's University Core Curriculum requirements.
SIUC re-entry
students who have not earned a baccalaureate- oriented A.A. or A.S.
degree before re-entry, and students concurrently enrolled at
another institution while attending SIUC must complete the SIUC
university core curriculum requirements. Concurrently enrolled
students should seek advice from SIUC on acceptable course
equivalents to SIUC university core curriculum requirements.

Individualized
Two Plus Two Option at SIUC
Apply for SIUC's Individualized
Two Plus Two option if you are just beginning your study at a
community college. If you are attending a community college, plan to transfer to SIUC and know what your major will be, the Individualized Two Plus Two Option allows for
a smooth transition to SIUC and ensures maximum transferrability of your community college coursework. By submitting the Individualized Two Plus Two application, you will receive:
- Advisement of courses specific to your
major.
- Guaranteed transfer of recommended community college courses.
- Semester by semester degree progress reports for participants and their
advisors.
The Capstone
Option
If you are graduating from a two-year occupational
program (an Associate in Applied Science degree), you can be
considered for entry into a unique program called the Capstone
Option, which offers transfer students an opportunity to build on
already marketable occupational skills. The Capstone Option
recognizes the value of the A.A.S. degree by designing a
baccalaureate curriculum of no more than 60 additional semester
hours of course work beyond the associate degree. SIUC majors and
specializations with a Capstone Option are:
To apply for the Capstone Option, complete both the Capstone
application and the SIUC undergraduate admission application. To
be considered for the Capstone Option, your Capstone application
must be on file by the end of your first semester at SIUC.
If you wish to learn more about Capstone, you may download a
Capstone
brochure and application or you may request them from your
community college counselor, from SIUC's Undergraduate Student
Admissions, or from Academic Support Programs. See transfer student
directory below for details.
You Won't Lose Credit When You Transfer
SIUC has no ceiling on the number of credit hours that
can be transferred and evaluated toward degree requirements.
Community college students are affected only by the requirement that
60 semester hours of the degree be earned at a four-year institution
and that the last 30 semester hours of an SIUC degree be earned at
SIUC.
The primary factor we consider when evaluating transfer
credit is the accreditation status of the college(s) you attended.
All college-level credit from regionally accredited institutions
will be accepted by SIUC at the time of admission.
Are there
situations where transfer students might lose credit? Like most senior institutions, SIUC does not accept credit
that is considered pre-college (remedial or developmental). Nor does
SIUC accept credit from institutions that are not regionally
accredited.
What Happens To My GPA?
SIUC recalculates your grade-point average for
admission purposes. We do this according to our grading policies and
procedures and on the basis of work from all previous colleges. If you have taken any
pre-college or remedial classes, those grades and credits are
ignored in calculating your GPA. Once you are admitted to SIUC you
will begin a new SIUC grade-point average. Your previous grades are
not part of your SIUC average. However, some specific programs, such
as teacher education, may calculate and maintain a complete overall
grade-point average (all grades earned at all institutions attended)
for their own use.
Class Standing Counts
The total number of hours we accept determines your
class standing at SIUC. We consider students who have completed
fewer than 26 semester hours (39 quarter hours) to be freshmen;
those who have completed 26 to 55 semester hours (39 to 83 quarter
hours) to be sophomores; those who have completed 56 to 85 semester
hours (84 to 128 quarter hours) to be juniors; and those who have
completed 86 or more semester hours (129 or more quarter hours) to
be seniors. The minimum number of semester hours needed for
graduation is 120.
When Should I Apply for Admission?
As a transfer student, you can apply anytime before
the semester in which you intend to enroll at SIUC. We encourage
applying a year in advance to ensure your choice of program and
housing, in addition to ensuring your consideration for scholarships
and financial aid.
The amount of credit you have accumulated
determines which documents we need to make a decision. If you are
enrolled at another college, we recommend that you apply no later
than the beginning of the last term before changing institutions.
If you have earned at least 26 semester hours, or 39 quarter
hours, submit an official transcript from each college you have
attended (not just the last one or the one you are now attending).
If you have earned fewer than 26 semester hours, submit
official transcripts from each college you have attended and your
high school transcript (showing class rank and class size) and your
ACT or SAT scores.
To avoid delays in being admitted,
remember the following:
- Enclose the $30 application fee
- Do not send unofficial copies of your transcripts or simply
grade slips; we must have your official transcript sent directly
from each college attended. They must have been issued within the last 30 days.
- SIUC must have official transcripts from each college
you have attended, not just your last transcript, even if it shows
your work from previous colleges.
Do not wait to send only the final transcript; we can
admit you on a partial transcript as long as you are eligible at the
time and you maintain your eligibility.
Official transcripts
should be sent from your transfer institution to:

When Do I Hear about Admission?
SIUC admits students on a rolling basis, which means
we can notify you of our decision two to three weeks after we
receive all the needed paperwork (the Undergraduate Admission
Application and all essential academic credentials). Transfer
students who have questions about their admission status may write
or call:

After Admission, What's Next?
Upon being admitted your transfer credit will be evaluated course-by-course. You will then receive written instructions about how to view this evaluation online on SalukiNet. You will also be able to view your degree progress report reflecting your transfer credit.
Please keep in mind that
when you submit the final and complete transcript from the college
you are presently attending (if this is the case), the evaluation of
your transferred credit will be updated accordingly. Transfer
students who have questions or need additional information about
their transfer credit evaluation may write or call:

During your first academic advisement and registration
session, your adviser will explain how your transferred credit will
apply to your major, which credit is considered elective or
general-transfer credit, and what courses remain to be taken at
SIUC. If you need this information before that time, you may contact
the chief academic adviser of the SIUC academic unit or department
into which you have been admitted. A listing of academic unit
contacts is provided in this publication.
Check Your Status On-Line
You can check your admission status and other
information in your file at SIUC through the Internet. Access the SalukiNet home page
(then click on "Your Records"). Through SalukiNet you
can receive information about your admission application, financial
aid, your Bursar account and, while you're enrolled at SIUC, your
class schedule, grades, GPA, and academic status!
Before you
begin, have your student ID number (Social Security number) and your
personal identification number (PIN) ready.
For PIN questions, check out SalukiNet

or Records at 618-453-2999.
Help Along The Way
If you are attending a two-year college in Illinois,
or have access to the Internet, you have access to course substitution
listings we have prepared for specific colleges. Your community
college counselor or academic adviser will be able to show you the
substitution listings and SIUC's Counselor's
Advisement Catalog, which lists recommended programs of
study for each of our majors. This kind of information is valuable
not only to let you know what will happen when you start at SIUC but
to help you plan your present curriculum to fit best with your
program of study at SIUC. We also help transfer students by:
- providing early advisement and registration opportunities for
transfer students who have been admitted 6 months prior to entry
term;
- preparing an applicant transfer credit evaluation, available online to
students as soon as possible after they are admitted; and
providing transfer
information on the Internet
Academic
Scholarships
SIUC Academic Scholarships for transfer students are
reserved for students who transfer to SIUC immediately after earning
an associate degree (A.A., A.S., A.F.A., A.E.S. or A.A.S.) from a
regionally accredited community college. To be considered for an
award, you must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least
3.75 (4.0=A), by SIUC calculation, for all courses taken at all
colleges attended.
Selection of transfer student scholarship
recipients is determined by the cumulative grade-point average from
all colleges the applicants have attended. The level of competition
will determine the minimum grade-point average required for
selection.
The SIUC academic scholarship award is valued at
$1000. SIUC offers a Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship Award on a
competitive basis for students who have been members of Phi Theta
Kappa for one academic year and have a cumulative grade-point
average of at least 3.75 (4.0=A). This award is an additional $500.

Housing Options
Transfer students who are 21 years of age or older or who have achieved sophomore class standing (26 semester hours) are not required to live in SIUC residence halls, although many prefer to do so. SIUC offers housing for students with sophomore status and above, floors for students 21 years of age and older regardless of class status, study floors, academic emphasis floors, break housing (during the academic year at a reasonable cost), single rooms, and the convenience of being close to campus and having everything included with your contract. There are also apartments available for single students and students with families—Wall & Grand, Evergreen Terrace, Southern Hills and Elizabeth Apartments.
