Password Rules for Certain SIU Computer Systems

The Network ID password (which faculty, staff, and students need for logging into SalukiNet, the campus VPN, the residence halls RezNet, the Desire2Learn learning system, the File Share service, and certain other campus systems) must be between 16 and 255 characters in length.  It is recommended (though not required) that it contain upper- and lower-case letters, numbers, and one or more special characters such as these:

~   !   +   -   {   }   [   ]   .   ?   *   _

Mac computer users may not be able to use the tilde character.  Spaces are now allowed in the password, and it can be in the form of a passphrase (a sequence of several words).  This password must be changed every 365 days (which you can do by logging into the Network ID Managment System).  Previous passwords cannot be reused in the future.

If you forget this password, you can reset it by going here and clicking the "Forgot Password?" button (instead of logging in).  You will be asked to answer the security questions that you created when setting up your Network ID.  If you should fail to answer them correctly, you will need to go to the "SalukiTech" Help Desk (a.k.a. the Computer Support Center) – now in Morris Library room 161-A – with a photo ID to obtain a temporary password.  If that is not possible, follow the instructions here.

The Google password (which faculty, staff, and students need for getting SIU e-mail either via e-mail client software on your PC or Mac or via the WebMail interface, or for accessing the various other services provided by Google Apps) must be 8 or more characters in length.  It is highly recommended that this password be made to consist of upper- and lower-case letters, numbers, and special characters, and that it does not contain dictionary words.

No spaces are allowed in the password. It is highly recommended that you change this password on a regular basis, perhaps at the same time that you change your Network ID password.  (You can change this password within Google Apps under the Accounts - Security - Password Management link.)

If you forget this password, you can reset it by going here.

The Banner password (which certain faculty and staff need for logging into some of the Banner Student Information Systems such as INB, e~Print, XTender, and WorkFlow) must be between 16 and 30 characters in length.  It is recommended (though not required) that it contain upper- and lower-case letters, numbers, and one or more special characters such as these:

!   "   %   *   +   /   :   _

Special characters that are not allowed in the password include @ $ & ( ) , < > ` ; = # (nor are spaces allowed).  This password must be changed every 365 days (which you can do from within Banner INB).

Those staff members who are permitted to utliize Banner INB job submission will be further limited in which of the above special characters they can properly use (due to the manner in which job submission interacts with other Banner systems).  They should not use quotation marks or an asterisk in their passwords.

If you forget this password, you can reset it by going here.

Note:  Other Banner systems such as the Argos reporting system, the Bolt-on's, and AppWorx use the Network ID password rather than the Banner password.

The Human Resources Self-Service (HRSS) password (which employees and student workers could start to use in October 2012 to view their payslips) must be 8 or more characters in length, with at least one upper-case letter, at least one lower-case letter, at least one number, and at least one special character.

No spaces are allowed in the password.  This password must be changed every 60 days (which you can do by logging into the HRSS).  More information about this password is available here.

If you forget this password, you can reset it by going to the HRSS login page and clicking on the "Login Assistance" link (instead of logging in).  You will be asked to provide your User Name (which is actually your Network ID) in order for instructions to be e-mailed to your SIUC e-mail address.
