SalukiNet Web Registration FAQs (Frequently-Asked Questions)
What is Web Registration?
Web Registration is a component of SalukiNet where students who are eligible to self-register can go
to register for SIUC classes. This type of registration is in many ways easier than using the registration
component of UniLink. Whereas UniLink required direct entry of classes using "Call Numbers" that are not otherwise
obvious, Web Registration allows picking classes by their Subject, Course Number, and Section Number. Even
better, you can use Web Registration to search for classes and, from the resulting list, just click on
the class you want in order to add it.
For the first several months of 2003, Web Registration was operational only as a pilot project, restricted to
students in the Graduate School and to students majoring in the School of Journalism. It was opened up
to a broader student body in mid-October 2003, in time for the start of advanced registration for Spring
2004 classes.
Who is eligible to use Web Registration?
Not all students will be eligible to use Web Registration, since some
departments and colleges currently limit or prohibit student self-registration.
If you don't know your eligibility for using Web Registration, contact your
academic advisement unit or your college to find out.
Another way to check your eligibility to use Web Registration is from within SalukiNet. Just choose the
REGISTRATION menu ... that's the menu where you would go to see your class schedule ... then click on
Registration Status. Once you choose the term for which you would like to register, you will be given a
summary of the term that describes your eligibility to register for classes, as well as whether or not you are
permitted to self-register using Web Registration. (For more detailed instructions on how to do this, please
Please realize that even if students in your department are normally allowed to self-register, that there may
be reasons why you, as any individual student, are not allowed to do so. These reasons may include academic
probation or suspension, financial or other holds, prior approval of your advisor, and various other reasons.
Also, because of increased federal monitoring of international student activity and the risk associated with
international students being out of compliance, SIUC's Office of International Students and Scholars has requested
that all international students be prevented from self-registering (that is, using Web Registration). Thus,
international students will have to register through their academic advisor or college.
When is Web Registration available?
During those times of the year when student self-registration takes place, Web Registration is normally
available the same hours as was UniLink registration: Monday through Friday from 7:15 am to 7:50 pm. Student
self-registration takes place beginning a few months before the start of the term and ending just after the
start of the term.
How do I use Web Registration?
To reach Web Registration within SalukiNet, choose the REGISTRATION menu, then click on Register. There,
once you choose the term for which you are registering, you will be taken to a page on which you can enter the
courses you are interested in. On that page you can either directly enter those courses, or you can go to one
or both of two additional search engines within Web Reg -- called the Power Search and the Section
Search -- to find and click on the courses.
There are various links within Web Registration to give you tips on using these three methods, each of which
has its advantages. By directly entering your courses, you can register on one screen with the fewest mouse
clicks. But by using the Power Search or the Section Search -- both of whose interfaces and
results pages resemble the "new" online class search engine introduced in Fall 2002 -- you can look for
alternative classes and even do "what if" types of queries.
We believe that you will find Web Registration fairly intuitive and rather easy to use. It's really just
the "point and click" stuff that's throughout SalukiNet, and so it shouldn't require having to do extensive
preparations beforehand. And if you do something wrong in Web Registration, an appropriate error message
will be displayed, with a link to a help file for further explanation. Registration via UniLink was never
like this. (However, if you do need more detailed instructions on how to do this, please
Are there self-registration options other than Web
Registration?
No. Up until Fall 2003, there had been the UniLink phone system, but it is no longer in service. UniLink used
to be the exclusive method for self-registration, and now Web Registration is the exclusive method.
Please realize also that you can use Web Registration -- or SalukiNet in general -- on shared computers that
are in the campus computer labs, computer labs in the dorms, and the Morris Library. Of course, whenever you access
SalukiNet on a shared computer, it is always wise to properly log out of SalukiNet and then close the Web browser
software when you are finished. The closing of the Web browser is especially critical when using a Netscape
browser set up with multiple "profiles" for different users.
