The University operates on a semester-based academic calendar, with two 16-week semesters in the Fall and Spring being the main terms that students are expected to attend.  An 8-week Summer session is available as well, but is optional for most students.

According to the academic calendar, the first term of the academic year is actually the Summer session The official 8-week Summer session is preceded by a 4-week Summer Intersession.  Classes scheduled during the Summer Intersession count as a part of the Summer session for credit hours and time status, GPA and Deans List, tuition and fee assessment, financial aid, and graduation eligibility calculation purposes.

In recent years, an optional Winter Intersession (formerly referred to as the "J-Term") set of classes has been held in-between the Fall and Spring semesters.  Classes scheduled during the Winter Intersession count as a part of the Spring semester for credit hours and time status, GPA and Deans List, tuition and fee assessment, financial aid, and graduation eligibility calculation purposes.
