Course Subjects and Identification Codes

Banner uses course subject codes to identify courses by discipline, enabling the Schedule of Classes to be searched and sorted by course code. When viewing courses for a specific term, students will see a course offering identified by three elements: Course Subject, Course Number, and Section Number.

• CRN: The unique course identifier.
• Course Subject: A 2- to 4-character code representing the teaching department.
• Course Number: A 3-digit number, sometimes with a letter suffix, indicating the course’s classification within the curriculum or degree level.

Course Section Numbers

Instructor 700-Numbers

Each instructor is assigned a unique Independent Study Instructor 700-Number. This number is used in the Schedule of Classes to link the instructor to the course for both teaching and budget purposes.

Combining Sections Meeting Together

To ensure accurate classroom assignments and effective use of instructional space, linked course sections meeting together must have enrollment capacities that reflect the anticipated combined enrollment.

General Classrooms

Academic Scheduling manages about 107 general classrooms for teaching purposes in 14 buildings across campus. Each classroom has a set capacity and arrangement for seating and/or technology enhancements.
