Semester Withdrawal | Office of the Registrar

If you need to withdraw from all your courses, this process is referred to as a University Withdrawal. You may withdraw from the University up until the end of the 10th week of the regular semester. Withdrawals may occur for any reason, including financial or physical hardship, in accordance with University Policy [SIU Board of Trustees 4 Policies A.6] .

How to Withdraw from SIU Carbondale

SalukiNet Self-Service does not allow students to drop all of their courses and should not be used for that purpose. To initiate a semester withdrawal, students must contact one of the offices listed below. This ensures compliance with state and federal regulations, particularly those related to financial aid and enrollment reporting.

Undergraduate students contact the Registrar's Office at withdraw@siu.edu
Graduate students contact the Graduate School at gradregistration@siu.edu
Law students contact the Simmons Law School at lawreg@siu.edu

If a student withdraws from a course before the end of the tenth day of the term, it won’t show up on their transcript. If they withdraw between the third and tenth week, a grade of W will be listed on their transcript. For shorter terms, the withdrawal dates and fees will be adjusted accordingly.

Tuition Adjustments

A refund of tuition and associated fees is granted according to the University's refund policy when students drop individual courses or withdraw from all courses within established deadlines.

Request for Tuition and Fee Refund Exception Due to Financial Hardship

Students facing serious financial hardship should contact the Office of the Bursar (618-453-2221 or bursar@siu.edu) and the Financial Aid Office (618-453-4334 or fao@siu.edu) before withdrawing to explore options for staying enrolled. If withdrawal is necessary, they can request a refund of tuition and fees that aren't normally refundable.

Requests for Refunds Outside Specified Time Periods

The following applies to all refund requests for tuition and student fees when a withdrawal occurs after the University’s specified refund period. Refunds in these cases are at the University's discretion.
